New Book Release: Jai The Albino Cow / Jai Ng’ombe Zeruzeru (Bilingual)

Can an albino cow possess abilities to be admired by other cows? In “Jai the Albino Cow: Jai Ng’ombe Zeruzeru” (published by AuthorHouse UK) by Gloria D. Gonsalves, an albino cow named Jai struggling with acceptance earns the respect of her village through her special abilities. The book features both English and Swahili text.

The story takes place in the fictional Kole Hills. Though Jai has the support of her family, the other residents of Kole Hills believes her to be cursed due to her albinism. But when she accomplishes a feat no other cow has done before, the rest of the community can’t but help be in awe of her magical skill.

“Jai the Albino Cow” teaches young readers to respect everyone and show kindness, regardless of another’s appearance. Gonsalves hopes the book will shape opinions about people living with albinism, particularly in areas where albinos are maligned.

The author stresses the book’s importance due to these problems: “The social stigma of looking different has some albinos being outcasted or struggling to fit into either black or white communities. … In some parts of the world, albinos are hunted for their body parts for magic potions by witch doctors.”
